When the Sad but Inevitable Occurs

It happened last night.  We got home from church, played with Macy for a while, and then I decided to sit on the couch and check blogs/Facebook for a little while before going to bed (a routine I adhere to almost every night).  I found my computer frozen with just a black screen up.  When I couldn't get a response from it, I forced a shut-down.  This isn't the first time it's happened...it needs a forced shut-down every now and then (what electronic gadget doesn't?), so I wasn't alarmed.  But, when I went to start it back up, it gave me an error message and suggested I push "Ctrl + Alt + Delete" to restart.  I complied, and received the same message.  Again and again.  :(  By that time, I was starting to get worried.  Jordan walked in, and I handed the whole thing over to him.  Neither of us are computer geniuses (though Jordan is much closer than I am!).  Jordan's pretty sure it's crashed, though.  Crashed, and the jury's still out on whether it's reviveable (not sure if that's a word, but I think you know what I mean!).   The jury is also still out on whether we will be able to recover anything from the hard drive.  Right now, that is my biggest concern.  I really, no, make that REALLY would hate to lose all the pictures, music, and other random files stored on there!  :(  The computer is several years old; it's a laptop that has been very heavily used; I guess it's not too surprising that it has died.  But, still, I was very sad about it last night.  Today, I am trying to have a more grown-up perspective on it, but it's still weighing me down.  It just really stinks!  :P  Of course, I don't have it backed up externally.  Well, maybe half of the pictures or so are on DVD's.  And I also store a lot of pictures on my online Picasa account, not to mention all the ones loaded on this blog.  So, I guess most of my favorites are around...just not in their neat little files running randomly through my screen saver anymore.  Oh, I'm making myself sad again!

So, please pray for us to be able to recover those things from the hard drive!

Oh, oh!

Don't give up hope yet. :) I'll see if I can get a link for you. There's an operating system called Knoppix (it's a type of Linux operating system) that runs from your CD drive. It actually is a really amazing little program, and I used it for several after "killing" my version of Windows on my old laptop.

Now, it's possible that more has crashed on your computer than just Windows, but if there's any chance of saving stuff off your hard drive, Knoppix will help you with it. You can get Knoppix online for "free" - all it costs is the shipping. :) I'll get a link for that, and then the link for how to save your stuff using Knoppix.

All right. It looks like Knoppix is no longer "free" unless you want to go the downloading route. I don't suggest that, as it is often difficult and didn't work for me the several times I used it. There are links here: http://www.knoppix.net/get.php

To where you can order it from. It looks like you can get it for around $10. Still much cheaper than a file-recovery service. :)

Anyway, here is a link to how to save your files via Knoppix.

Good luck! If you have any questions, you can email me. :) paula dot pudewell at that gmail place. :)

Thanks for the encouragement, girls! Debbie, I too wish we were up there and could get some professional help from your husband! ;) If he has any tips to get us on the right track to recovering the files, we're all ears!
