Update on Baby Horak - 32 Weeks Pregnant

Our baby probably weighs about 4 pounds and is about fifteen to seventeen inches tall. Her skin is becoming less translucent and pinker, as layers of fat are deposited under the skin. Her skeleton is rapidly ossifying (turning from cartilage into solid bone), which is why her kicks are becoming visible through my shirt! I'm gaining about a pound a week and roughly half of that goes right to the baby. In fact, she'll gain a third to half of her birth weight during the next 7 weeks as she fattens up for survival outside the womb. She now has toenails, fingernails, and real hair (or at least some peach fuzz). Our baby's brain is working overtime these days, developing faster than ever.   Connections between individual nerve cells are growing at a frenetic clip, and our baby can now perceive information from all five senses. Of course, she can't smell anything right now, but that's only because she is still submerged in amniotic fluid and needs to be breathing air to get a whiff of anything. So, mine will be one of the very first scents our baby breathes in, a scent that will quickly become her very favorite! To fill her time these days, our little girl is making faces, hiccupping (which can be a tad bit annoying to Mommy!), swallowing, breathing, pedaling with little hands and feet along my uterine wall, and sucking her thumb.

Here's my new picture!  Getting bigger!  ;)
