Potty Training Adventures
He's a big boy in undies now, folks! Bret's only had one or two accidents a day for the last few days, and I have to say I'm SO happy with how well this whole process has gone! Don't get me wrong...I contemplated quitting each day for the first 4 or 5 days! :P But, there was always something...some little sign of progress...that made me decide to persevere.
For the first couple days, we pretty much stayed on the potty as much as we could. That sounds much easier than it actually was! Cody was over it pretty fast. Turns out he likes it when Mommy is up and moving around more. ;) Bret has the energy one might expect of an almost-two-year-old boy...but he also really enjoys being the center of attention...so I pulled out all the tricks I had in my Mommy-bag and somehow we managed to wile away the hours of those long couple of days while he figured out what it meant to go potty in the potty. Those first couple days dragged by. We would wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait for him to finally go a little potty. And half the time, he didn't even tell us he'd gone. It would just suddenly be there. That was very discouraging. Here's the kid who's been telling me for the last 6 months whenever he wets his diaper, and now he can't tell me he just went potty??? But, at the end of the first day, he DID finally tell us once when he went! So, we plowed ahead! After another day at it, we found we weren't having to wait quite as long anymore. On day 3, I let him off the potty. Oh, we had SO many accidents!!! I couldn't believe it! After waiting for over an hour for him to "go" on the potty each time for the last couple days, I was floored that he was having an accident every 10-30 minutes! I couldn't get on top of him! AND most of the time, he wouldn't even tell me when he'd had one!! :P Then, sometime at the end of the day, he told me a couple different times when he'd had an accident. Progress. I decided to continue on to Day #4. The next day there were fewer accidents, and he was more bothered by them than he had been the day before. I managed to stay on top of him a little better, taking him potty more often, and he got a little faster at emptying his bladder when he was on the potty. By Day #5, he was really getting the hang of it. Even told me a couple times that he needed to go potty (though he'd have an accident before we could make it to the potty). On Day #6, we had a HUGE triumph! He told me he needed to go potty, made it to the potty dry, and completed his task! And he just keeps getting better! I really thought that potty training him this young would mean that I would always have to "babysit" his bladder, but I've been pleasantly surprised that he's caught on to the concept of recognizing when he needs to go! Way to go, Bret!
