Memorable

Yesterday, Serena came out of her Sunday School class with a headband/crown made of construction paper with sparkly foam "jewels" stuck on it, a sparkly pipe cleaner, and a blue feather.  I still have NO idea what this particular craft had to do with anything she might have learned in her class, but it reminded me of a few of the 'crafts' we kids used to do.  I still have to stifle uproarious laughter at the memory of one of Julie's creations...a card with two pipe cleaners coming out the top.  She thought it was beautiful, but it looked like it had antennas!  ;D  Then, I remembered this picture from December 1989:

Jason was 9, I was 6, Julie 5.  Jess would have been almost 3, but apparently didn't make the picture.  She was probably too busy getting "bit" while peering over the counter at pans of cookies straight out of the oven.  ;)  I remember we got quite a bit of mileage out of those fancy crowns!  We also got a lot of mileage out of our bin of "dress-up clothes."  Most of the items in the bin were Mom's old dresses, belts, aprons, and scarves.  Of course, there were a few boyish items for poor Jason's sake.  Having no brothers, he was often dragged into our play.  And then, there were the shoes!  One day, we were at the mall with Grandma and found some women's shoes on clearance for $1.  No wonder, since they were high heeled fabric-covered things with a big bow on the toes and they came in hideous shades of pink, purple, green, and yellow.  Think vintage Minnie Mouse shoes; that's about right.  Anyway, you can imagine how BEAUTIFUL those shoes appeared to little girls like us!  Grandma bought them for us, and they were staples in all of our "dress-up" play from that point on.  I wonder what became of them???

One more thing about this picture that is too funny not to mention.  We are sitting on my bed.  You might wonder how I know that, since Julie & I had identical headboards.  Well, you see that yellow stuffed animal stuck in the rungs?  That is a stuffed "My Little Pony" horse (don't forget, we were children of the '80's), affectionately known as "Mama."  Julie had one too...purple, I think?  And their mains and tales were losing hairs at an alarming rate, in spite of all our efforts to "keep them nice" by brushing, braiding, and decorating them with all manner of clips and bands.  Why Julie and I felt we had to stick those horses in our headboards, I cannot imagine; but it must be that way.  How else could we possibly sleep?  ;)
